31 Horror Films in 31 Days Challenge, Film Seven: Lovely Molly

This is yet another blog-along post where I'll be blogging along as I watch another horror film as part of the 31 Horror Films in 31 Days challenge. Warning: Since I'm blogging my thoughts whilst watching the film THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

These are raw blog posts. I start and I write until I finish without any editing afterwards. I just post the raw thoughts from the film as they occur. Enjoy, Ok so before the film even starts I have a warning telling me that strong language, violence, sexual scenes and mature themes lie ahead... How exciting. The cool thing is that I know absolutely nothing about this film and therefore I go in with an open mind. I've not seen a trailer, read a review and hadn't even heard of the film before I saw it and randomly decided to record it on Sky.

My dog has decided to have a really loud scratch fest over the sound of her talking. I think he waited until the exact point that I started the film to do this. Thanks, Hamish. Thanks a lot. Can we get on with the movie now? Nope. Apparently there's still scratching to be done.
Ok wow. Starting at a very vulnerable place, nice and haunted. It looks like this is gonna be very "found footage" in terms of style. OH GOD PLEASE DON'T LET THIS BE ANYTHING LIKE PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.

She's ... revealing a chair?

My dog has come over and is begging to hop up onto the sofa with me. I think he's scared of the film already, the poor guy. Tough luck. He's not coming up. I just hope there are no bad scenes involving dogs in this movie.

You know when there are tense moments in a film where it's gone all quiet and you're really on edge as a result? Well my dog has gone back to scratching which covers up the silence and eases the tension a little because I can't hear anything over it. My dog is acting as a scare-decreaser tonight.

In the garage.... is that the chair she lifted the sheet off of earlier? Is the house gonna be haunted by this discarded yet malevolent chair? I can dig it.

I've not typed anything for about ten minutes. I'm a little bored if I'm honest. Did I speak too soon? She's woken to noises on the house. How promising... Creepy child crying noises. OK. Good. Things getting spooky.

Oh splendid, our titular protagonist seems to be possessed. It's certainly become more interesting as it is starting to pose a lot of questions to the audience. Who was in the closet? Why is she filming that nearby family? Why is she sat naked alone in her room? Who is "he"?

Dog scratching again over a quiet moment of dialogue. Ace.

OK. I'll be honest. It just got to the bit where an eerie voice is calling out her name and singing some weird song to her and I had to put it on mute mainly because it's 3am and it's dark and I'm alone. I admit it, OK? Something in a film creeped me out a little. I'm actually impressed.

Hooves... never a good sign. Unless you're a horse rider or a goat farmer I guess.

Artistic shots of the back of her head...

My dog is scared again and in need of cuddles.

This isn't the first film that has involved a scene showing a woman being raped or assaulted by an invisible force. It makes for uncomfortable viewing and I'd certainly like to read any critical arguments or discussions on this bizarre trope.

As a pescetarian I can't even look at a deer carcass. It may be a real deer carcass or some fabricated prop. Still, it makes me uncomfortable.

The woman playing Molly delivers a fairly convincing portrayal of an unstable young woman an a deliciously creepy manner.

Did I just hear a Wilhelm scream?

Horribly gruesome moment as a sweet kiss very quickly changes to Molly trying to bite her husbands lips off. That was a little shocking. As if I needed to be scared of kisses.

The figure she walks to at the end wasn't scary... it looks like a bad Halloween costume or a bad high school football team mascot gone wrong.

OK, so rough synopsis... the film follows a young couple of newly-weds who move into Molly's childhood home. The husband within the marriage, Tim, often works away from home and therefore Molly is home alone quite a bit. Molly soon becomes rather unhinged. She has a history of drug and mental health problems stemming from the death of her mother and abusive father. Soon we begin to question of her mental state is deteriorating or if supernatural forces are at work...

Did I enjoy this movie?
Not wildly but I do think it's something that horror nuts should see. It has gore, sex, violence, jump scares, psychological horror... the works. It's shot in traditional narrative camera work plus found footage style hand-held camera scenes that really add to the story in an interesting, jumbled way that feed the unhinged nature of the piece. It sets up a lot of questions that it doesn't necessarily answer which would obviously annoy some viewers and thrill others. It was certainly an interesting watch but I can't say it's one I enjoyed. If you like tis then I think you'd like the work of Lars Von Trier and vice versa, if you like Trier you'll probably like this. Poses more questions than it answers, did not enjoy. Oh well.
