Simpsons to kill off a major character?

MTV just screened the headline "Simpsons to kill off iconic character" as a news headline at the bottom of the screen during an in-between-show news report. This news item, however, was not discussed. Could it be true? Could Springfield be about to lose a friendly face?

There are other reports confirming the news. Who will it be? Any clues have been vague so it's still pretty impossible to tell which character is going to kick the bucket. The Simpsons aren't shy to kill off characters. They've previously shocked audiences with the death of Maude Flanders AND Springfield mobster Fat Tony (Fat Tony died in an episode and has since been replaced by a relative who has taken over the name and role of Fat Tony).
