Halloween Movie recommendations

Not going to a Halloween event on Halloween?
That's fine.
Halloween is a great time to curl up and watch a good movie. Many people will opt for a horror film on Halloween so here are suggestions of good movies to watch at this spooky time of the year.

Repo! The Genetic Opera

If you wanted your Halloween flick this year to be a little musical, maybe that's just what you need: a musical. Repo! The Genetic Opera is a quirky, indie delight with great music and surprising casting. It has gained quite the cult following but is definitely under-appreciated in the movie scene as a whole. This is definitely a film for those who can't handle too much gore or jump-scare movie tactics.

But if you want a combination of fake blood and guts with some prog/alternative beats and lashings of singing then this will be right up your alley.

Underworld
This film is just a lot of sexy people in cool outfits with big guns and for some reason that is undeniably
sexy. There's literally just a scene of Michael Sheen pushing bullets out of his body and it's sexy. The franchise consists of four films:

  • Underworld
  • Underworld Evolution
  • Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
  • Underworld Awakening
Any of them make a good choice. Personally I just appreciate Kate Beckinsale with fangs and wrapped up in PVC/leather. A good, supernatural franchise to sink your teeth into.

Rosemary's Baby
Horror films today are full of systematic storytelling techniques, lashings of fake blood/guts and jump scares.
I, however, find myself more scared by some of the classics. This is a film that left me feeling a little insecure. Not quite scared, just uneasy. After I first watched it I recall closing the curtains before I went to bed just in case. If you know nothing about this film then don't read any information on it, just go watch it with an open mind.

Don't Look Now
The last time I saw this film I actually rented it from Blockbuster. Wow.
How strange.... it must have been some time ago then.

The strange thing is that, with this film, I only really recall the beginning and the end. Believe me, you'll remember the end. In fact the less said about this film the better. It's a classic that you have to see. Not the scariest, you probably won't be screaming and jumping the whole way through, but it should be watched.

Antichrist
This is such a weird film but I'd definitely re-watch it again if I saw it was on TV. This Lars Von Trier project only features three actors and is a truly unhinged story of a man and a woman who, following the death of their son, go out into nature to a little cabin in the woods to heal. Like most films where a couple go to a cabin in the woods, creepy things eventually start to happen. It got a lot of recognition at the Cannes Film Festival and, as a movie, has been rather controversial with very mixed reviews. Like a book the film is split into chapters. It's certainly more artistic than your average horror film and for that reason alone I really appreciated it. The imagery of the film is particularly striking and will stay with you once the credits have rolled. This is not a film for people who can't cope with violence, nudity and graphic sex scenes.

So I Married An Axe Murderer

And then, for those who can't deal with the gore and graphic sexuality of Antichrist or other such horror films, here's a murder themed comedy. You have nothing to fear with this film.

Aspiring beat poet Charlie, played by Mike Myers, is totally afraid of commitment. In the past he has come up with insane reasons to end his reationships. Then, after being urged by friends and family to settle down, he meets Harriet and falls head over heels. Eventually he thinks he may have found the one... but the more he falls in love with her, the more he learns about her past and as the pieces fall together sweet Harriet may not be as sweet as she appears...

This is one of my favourite films of all time and I highly recommend it.
Well those are some of my picks. I hope you can curl up and check some of them out. Stay spooky,
