Why we need gay marriage: Protecting Families

One of the many reasons why society needs gay marriage is to protect the sanctity of families. Families take many shapes and forms and they're important in their own right. Every family is different. Straight couple can use donor sperm to get pregnant due to fertility issues if they need it. The husband or male partner within that relationship is parent by default and there are usually few legal or societal issues to follow. When lesbian couples, or femme queer couples, use a sperm donor to get pregnant due to fertility issues it can sometimes be a little bit more complicated. The mother who isn't involved in the carrying of the child or the birthing process has to legally 'adopt' the child in some parts of the world just to gain parental rights. These are two different cases, but it is in the case of same sex parentage where the queer community sees more trouble than straight couples. This is why we need the legislation that marriage provides: so that families can just be families.
